Man City star ‘vetoed’ Instagram caption and is ‘most accomplished’ Football Manager player at the club
Although he is on a tear this season, scoring seven goals in 16 appearances for Manchester City, midfielder Ilkay Gundogan perhaps shines the brightest off of the playing field.
As reported by Pol Ballus and Paul Hirst in a recent article for the Times, it was revealed that the German international had became concerned for the livelihoods of staff at restaurants and cafes that he frequently visited in Manchester, when they were ordered to shut by the Government last year due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Highlighting the kind-hearted nature of the midfielder, a source close to the player has revealed that Ilkay Gundogan personally called them and asked, ‘What can I do to help?’ It certainly wasn’t all talk either.
The former Borussia Dortmund star has recently set up a charity promoted on his social media pages, auctioning special items and events involving Gundogan in an attempt to raise money for some of the venues that are currently struggling due to the Covid-19 induced lockdown in Manchester.
The report also goes on to draw attention to a time when the 29 year-old’s social media manager recently suggested posting a picture on his client’s Instagram account, with the caption, “Happy to score goals“. However, it is claimed that the player himself vetoed the idea, being more interested in the success of the team, according to those who know him best.
While he is perhaps a more reserved man on the field and in and around the City Football Academy, the reports are that according to Manchester City staff, he is one of the most accomplished players on Football Manager – so much so that there is a belief that Gündogan is destined to become a manager in real life.
The midfielder, who has recently been nominated for the Premier League Player of the Month for the month of January, is reportedly ‘hooked‘ on the game – which seems to be getting him through a pretty lonely private life during the lockdown.
Gundogan will be hoping that the goals continue to flow for both him and his Manchester City comrades. However, no matter the results on the pitch, off the pitch it appears the midfielder will focus just as much effort into improving his life, and the life of others.
