Evgeni Malkin and Zach Aston-Reese scored in the third period as the Penguins won for the ninth time 13 games. Casey DeSmith had 22 saves in his second start since Feb. 11. Mika Zibanejad scored the Rangers, who had their season-best three-game winning streak halted.

Washington was without forward Tom Wilson, who served the first game of a seven-game suspension for Friday’s hit on Boston defenseman Brandon Carlo. Joel Farabee scored for Philadelphia, which lost its second straight and finished 3-3 during a grueling nine-day, six-game stretch. BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired right-hander Duane Underwood Jr. in a trade with the Chicago Cubs. The 26-year-old Underwood went 1-0 with a 5.66 ERA in 17 games with Chicago during the pandemic-shortened season. He was designated for assignment on Tuesday. The Cubs received minor league first baseman Shendrik Apostel in the deal.
UNDATED (AP) — Philadelphia 76ers standouts Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons didn’t play in the NBA All-Star Game because of a coronavirus contact tracing issue. Embiid would have been a starter for Team Durant, coached by 76ers coach Doc Rivers. Simmons was to have been a reserve for Team LeBron. The league announced the players were ruled out about eight hours before tipoff. New Orleans’ Zion Williamson started in Embiid’s place. A person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press that the contact was with a barber who is regularly tested for COVID-19 and often works with Embiid and Simmons.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Seth Lundy scored 31 points _ one away from matching his career high _ and Penn State rallied to stun Maryland 66-61. Lundy made 11 of Penn State’s 19 field goals. Lundy entered Sunday’s contest having scored 30 total points in the last seven games. Eric Ayala sank a pair of foul shots to put Maryland ahead 57-51 with 2:51 remaining. Lundy followed with 3-pointer, John Harrar made two free throws, and Lundy’s contested jumper in the lane with 1:23 left gave Penn State its first lead and they never trailed again. Aaron Wiggins scored 15 points with 10 rebounds for the Terrapins.
UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) — Christyn Williams scored 26 points and top-ranked UConn used a stifling defense to overwhelm Villanova 84-39 Sunday in the semifinals of the Big East Tournament. Paige Bueckers had 18 points and eight assists and Olivia Nelson-Ododa added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Huskies (23-1). The Huskies will play for their 19th Big East title in their first year back in the league after spending seven seasons dominating the American Athletic Conference. Sarah Mortensen had 15 points to lead Villanova (15-6). Maddy Siegrist, the Big East’s leading scorer, put up her team’s first points on a 3-point play, but was held scoreless the rest of the game.
